Executive

Ian Whitney

  • Ian Whitney is an accomplished composer of classical music and is currently completing his Doctor of Musical Arts (Composition) at the Sydney Conservatorium where he is also a sessional lecturer. Recently, Ian has completed projects for the Australian Film Television and Radio School and acted as Regional Manager, Touring for Musica Viva. Prior to that, Ian was a Project Officer at the Australia Council for the Arts in both Music and Capacity Building. For 5 years, Ian was Cultural Affairs Officer at the Washington Embassy. Ian brings skills in public speaking, grant writing and media to his role which will focus on identifying emerging and established musicians suitable for touring, contract negotiation, identifying venues and all over management the planning and execution of extending the reach of classical music to the regions.

Naseema Sparks AM

  • Naseema Sparks AM is an experienced Chair and Non-Executive Director with expertise in consumer-facing companies experiencing growth. She has been a professional Non-Executive Director since 2007, serving on boards of a diverse range of companies including ASX listed and private companies, statutory authorities and not-for-profit arts boards. In the Cultural Sector, Naseema is immediate past Chair of Sydney Living Museums (Museums of History NSW), and current Chair of the Classical Music, Opera & Choral artform board in NSW. She has also served on the board of the Biennale of Sydney, Sydney Dance Company and was Deputy Chair of the Melbourne Arts Festival. She spent her executive career in the advertising industry for 25 years. Her most recent role was as Managing Director and Global Partner of M&C Saatchi in Australia. She has an MBA from Melbourne Business School and is a Past President of Chief Executive Women.

Jan Bowen AM, FRSN

    Jan Bowen has been involved with music for all her professional life. For 14 years she chaired Sydney Youth Orchestras, transforming it from a struggling, financially problematic organisation to a thriving aspect of the NSW cultural fabric. Now having joined the MitR board, she is also on the board of the Australian Haydn Ensemble. Other governance experience includes nine years as a Director of Wenona School, three years as Chair, and five years as a Director of the Union, University & Schools Club. Jan also spent several months in Outback Queensland taking art to remote communities. She has been a weekly guest on Channel 10’s lifestyle program Til Ten and an expert panellist for the ‘Mo’ Awards. Jan is also a best selling author, having sold over a million copies of 32 books covering legal topics in plain language, travel and profiles of prominent Australians.

David Francis

  • David Francis is the Chief Executive officer of the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music. He joined WollCon in May 2021 after leading renowned regional arts organisation Four Winds Concerts Inc — home of the Four Winds Festival — as Executive Director since 2014. David’s skills not only lie in music programming but in organisational change and development in the arts, both in the UK and Australia. His work at Four Winds transformed the organisation from a biennial music Festival to a thriving, year-round organisation. David’s work in the UK included producing and programming the Contemporary Music Network, a touring agency that supported the development and touring of new collaborations and performances. He subsequently developed Sound and Music, the UK’s peak body for art music. David is also a Director of the Australian Music Centre.

Dr Erin Helyard

  • Dr Erin Helyard is an acclaimed conductor, a virtuosic performer of the harpsichord and fortepiano and a scholar who is passionate about promoting discourse between musicology and performance. As Artistic Director and co-founder of Pinchgut Opera and the Orchestra of the Antipodes in Sydney he has forged new standards of excellence in historically informed performance. The company won Best Rediscovered Opera (2019) for Hasse’s Artaserse at the International Opera Awards in London. Operas under his direction have been awarded Best Opera at the Helpmann Awards for three consecutive years (2015-2017). With Richard Tognetti, Erin won an ARIA for Best Classical Album in 2020.

Karen Moses

  • Karen Moses has a business leadership background in the energy sector and is an experienced Non-Executive Director. She was the former Deputy Chair of Sydney Symphony, Chair of Sydney Dance Company and Chair of the NSW Artform Board for Dance and Physical Theatre. Her current directorships include Orica Ltd, Charter Hall Group and SnowyHydro Ltd. As an executive, her roles covered all operational aspects, major projects and corporate functions including finance, capital markets, strategy and transactional activity, risk, Information Technology and HSE.

The Hon. Don Harwin

  • The Honourable Don Harwin served in the NSW Parliament for 23 years in a range of roles, including 5 years as the Minister for the Arts and 6 years as President of the Legislative Council. During this time, he secured over $2.5 billion in funding for over 150 cultural infrastructure projects (including the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall upgrade, Walsh Bay re-development, Sydney Modern at AGNSW, the Powerhouse Museums at Parramatta, Ultimo and Castle Hill, and the Bundanon Art Museum). He also secured the future of the National Arts School and the Theatre Royal Sydney. He has been appointed to the Advisory Committee of Roc Partners, one of the largest and most experienced private markets investment managers in the Asia Pacific and, also serves as a Trustee of a small legacy public sector superannuation fund with over $500 million under management. He is Director of Harwin Advisory, a firm established to act as a key catalyst in fostering the role that arts and culture can play in place-making. He serves as a Board Member of the Australia Council for the Arts and the Australia Youth Trust. Previously, he has served as the Co-Chair of the NSW Joint Council on Closing the Gap, the NSW Representative on the COAG Energy Council, a Board Member of the NSW State Archives and Records Authority and a Member of the NSW Sesquicentenary of Responsible Government Committee. He is a Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD) and a Member of the Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees.
