Australian Romantic Classical Orchestra Mozart’s Clarinet
The Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra (ARCO) is dedicated to bringing history to life through vibrant, historically informed performances of orchestral and chamber music from the late 18th to early 20th centuries. Performing on period instruments, the orchestra offers audiences an authentic sound world that captures the style and spirit of the music as it was originally conceived.
At the heart of ARCO’s work is a commitment to both performance and education. The orchestra tours nationally, presenting live concerts that highlight the richness of historically informed performance (HIP). It also delivers a wide range of educational initiatives, including workshops, pre-concert talks, and outreach programs designed to engage students, musicians, and the broader community.
Led by co-artistic directors Rachael Beesley and Nicole van Bruggen, ARCO collaborates with leading guest musicians and musicologists to stay at the cutting edge of HIP practice and research. These collaborations ensure that each performance is both artistically compelling and informed by the latest musicological insights.
In 2023, the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra was invited, as the only Australian ensemble, to become a member of the prestigious Early Music in Europe (REMA). Described by Limelight Magazine as “the best HIPsters under the Southern Cross” (2024), ARCO continues to redefine how audiences experience classical music in Australia.
“A thrilling performance … offering listeners an electrifying, visceral experience that transports them back to a richly imagined 19th-century sound world.”
